Manure Application Recommendations

Now that wheat is harvested and the county fair has come and gone - it's time to clean out the barns! You want to make sure your nutrients are not leaving your farm or fields. We have some helpful reminders for you!

Check the Weather

Use weather.gov for the most accurate precipitation predictions.

Incorporate After Application

Incorporating after application or injecting helps the manure stay with the soil and not leave the field. If you prefer a no till system, then you should apply manure on a growing crop.

Need a field to spread on?

Ask your neighbor! A neighbor might be able to utilize your manure, which would be a better alternative than your barn getting full.

Additional Resources

Another good resource is the Western Lake Erie Basin Nutrient Application Restrictions. Click the button below to read further details.

Use Setbacks

A good rule of thumb is to allow 35 feet setbacks along roadside ditches, creeks, and streams. You want to make sure the nutrients provided by the manure are used by the crops and are not leaving the field.

Short Term Stockpiling

Short term stockpiling is also a good option when needed to get manure off the farm. This method is used for pen pack or poultry litter.

Setback recommendations for manure stockpiling:

  • 500 feet from neighboring residences
  • 300 feet from any ponds, streams, or waters of the state
  • 100 feet from a public road

For the full list of recommendations click the button below to see the USDA stockpiling requirements for federal programs.

Limit Application in the Same Location

It's important to vary the location of your manure application. This will help you get the most value out of your manure by utilizing the nutrients in several areas rather than oversaturating one area.

Questions?

Contact our office and we will be happy to answer any questions and help you develop a plan for your manure!
